Everyone dreams of making beautiful renovations to their home. They also equally dread the thought of hiring a renovation contractor.
When it comes to hiring a renovation contractor, there is so much anxiety involved in the process. Am I going to get ripped off? Will they do a good job? Will they finish it on time? Did a make a huge mistake hiring them? So many questions pass through people’s minds, the whole experience can become paralyzing.
Hiring a renovation contractor for your next home improvement project doesn’t need to be like that. All you need is a plan and knowing the right questions to ask and the right things to look out for.
Justin York, of York Construction, a home renovation company in Toronto says that having a plan on how to hire and what to look for is most of the battle. You need to know what questions to ask, what references to look for, and how to find online reviews you can trust.
The first thing you need to do is have a list of questions for each contractor you interview. You’ll want to know how long they have been in business if they are insured and sample work of projects in your area.
You’ll want to verify their reviews online. You can look at Google reviews, Homestars if you are here in Canada, Yellow Pages and even the Better Business Bureau. Look at all of their reviews, read through the descriptions, and draw your own conclusions.
You’ll want to look over any and all paperwork and contracts to determine the scope of work, costs, caps on going over budget and other items that apply to you. You’ll also want to know if the workers are insured, here in Canada be sure to check they are covered by WSIB insurance.
As long as you have a plan beforehand, you should be ok. The infographic below has some other general hiring tips as well.
